Forty letters from Barlach, arranged in alphabetical order by correspondent, include: five letters (1932-1933) to Fritz Adler, director of the Stralsmunder Museum, about Barlach's sculpture designs for a war memorial, with detailed comments concerning the conception of his work and its exhibition; a letter to the writer Friedrich Düsel (1892) in which Barlach reports on his life and studies in Dresden and his first attempts at literature and sketching; fifteen letters to the writer Hans Frank (1918-1936) contain reflective discussions of Barlach's graphic work and his views on theater. Barlach also discusses and criticizes Frank's work. Barlach writes about himself, expressing confusion and self doubt (1919, 1920, 1923), and about his frustration with the political changes in Germany and the Nazi blacklisting of his works (1936). A postcard from Friedrich Schult to Hans Frank (1921) describes Barlachs's sudden departure to Berlin. Nineteen letters from Barlach to the author Arthur Moeller van den Bruck (1913-1922) discuss in depth the war, literary works, describe visiting August Gaul's studio, and mention Bruno Paul (1915), the poet Theodor Däubler, and his new book Mit silberner Sichel (1916). Notable is a letter (1913) in which Barlach comments on Moeller-Bruck's book Die italienische Schönheit, and his own aesthetic conceptions and work. With one letter to an unidentified collector.
